Chili King

June 18th, 2017

20170616_123552There is no shortage of Asian cuisine on South Park Street, and new to the arena is Chili King. It replaces the short-lived Angkor-wat, which replaced Inka Heritage.

Chili King has an enormously long menu, spanning cold and hot appetizers, rice dishes, noodle dishes, various types of entrees, “famous sauteed,” lunch specials and even sushi. My normal tactic is to try a cross-section, and here is what I have to report:

“American” appetizers include egg rolls and crab rangoon. The other apps, such as the sliced pork stomach ($7.99), are typically not found on an Americanized Chinese menu. The strips of pork stomach weren’t too chewy but essentially had no flavor other than the bit of chili sauce on top, so you may need to add more sauce like soy sauce. The portion size is enough to feed 2-3 people with an entrée.

I didn’t expect the lamb with fish in creamy sauce ($14.99) to be served as a soup. Fortunately, you get a generous portion of both–the lamb came in bite-sized pieces, and the fish was very tender and absorbed some of the broth flavor well. Other similarly categorized entrees include the hot & spicy solo fish fillet ($13.99) and dried string bean with pork ($11.99).

20170614_122549The Singapore noodles ($13.45) is a heaping plate of noodles with the right amount of curry seasoning, plus giant chunks of chicken, lots of shrimp and an over-abundance of vegetables. It’s good as-is and even better with a little Sriracha on top.

You will find a section of the menu called “boiled/casserole” comprised of hot pots. I tried a dry pot instead; specifically, the turnip & twice-cooked pork dry pot ($15.99). A pleasant surprise, the pork came in the form of thinly sliced pork belly, mixed with both crunchy and tender vegetables. I appreciated the perfect amount in of heat from the chili peppers.

Of note, there is a fairly extensive array of vegetarian dishes as well.

Chili King is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout. Delivery is available.

Summer bucket list 2017

June 11th, 2017

steve-miller-band(This is an update of a previous blog post.)

When you live a northern state like Wisconsin, you have to really take advantage of the seemingly few warm days we have. Madison, like Milwaukee, Chicago and other nearby cities, really crams a lot of events together from May to September.

Here is a list of things I look forward to doing each summer in and around Madison:

  • Community festivals such as Verona Hometown Days
  • Dane County Farmers’ Market, followed by Bloody Marys at Genna’s (which is open at 10 a.m. Saturdays during Farmers’ Market)
  • Concerts on the Square
  • Bike Night at Quaker Steak
  • Boating on Lake Mendota (with a stop at Three-Foot Bay)
  • Tubing on the Sugar River (and hanging out afterward at Wisconsin Riverside Resort)
  • Concert at Breese Stevens Field
  • Memorial Union Terrace
  • Backyard concerts at Wisconsin Brewing Co.
  • Governor Nelson State Park
  • Golf outings (especially the Middleton Chamber’s)
  • Sand volleyball
  • Flea market at McGaw Park
  • Madison Mallards Duck Blind
  • Brewers tailgate
  • A double-feature at Highway 18 Outdoor Theatre
  • Live on King Street
  • Mad-City Ski Team show
  • Maxwell Street Days
  • Art Fair on the Square
  • Taste of Madison (and Taste of Madison judging)

The Verona Woods

June 4th, 2017

20170507_121716The Verona Woods is a restaurant and bar situated in a growing business park that serves better-than-casual fare. Judging by a one-hour wait on a recent Friday night, it’s become a popular spot.

The menu is creative and long, starting with a half-page of appetizers that include two burgers for some reason.

  • Many of the appetizers appealed to me, and I settled on the Tequila Sunrise Tiger Shrimp ($12), which is perfectly cooked with a hint of grilled flavor, and it sits atop fresh guacamole contrasted with crispy wonton wrappers. It’s a very enjoyable way to start a meal.
  • I know it’s out of the ordinary to rave about chicken tenders, but Verona Woods’ Tater Chip Chicken Tenders ($6 half, $12 full) are breaded in potato chips. That, along with the juicy chicken, makes for a tasty combo.

20170507_123216Several of the entrees come in lunch and dinner portions. Friday features fish fry, and Saturday features baby back ribs.

  • The short rib in the braised red vino short rib pasta ($8 lunch, $15 dinner) was supremely tender, and the flavorful broth was a delight to eat with the pasta. This was definitely a highlight.
  • The chicken cordon bleu ($11) is a good sandwich because of the bacon and grilled bun, both of which helped mask the somewhat dry chicken.
  • Among the sides, the tomato bisque ($3 cup, $4 bowl) was very creamy and a little sweet. Other sides include bourbon brown sugar carrots ($4) and kale caesar side salad ($3).
  • The robust food selection also features burgers, seafood, steaks, salads and tacos. On a future visit, I’ll get either the shallot cream chicken ($15) or the lemon grass halibut ($24).

The bar features several specialty cocktails and a decent wine list. I tried the Verona Woods’ version of the Bloody Mary, which is made with Four Roses bourbon and more Worsteshire than normal. The garnish was the same pickle that comes with the sandwiches, plus two green olives and a slice of lemon.

The Verona Woods is open every day for lunch and dinner.
