Jersey Mike’s

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

20170310_121542As the name implies, Jersey Mike’s is a New Jersey-based sub shop, and it recently made its way to Greenway Station. For reference, Jersey Mike’s most closely resembles Cousins Subs, featuring hot and cold subs on fresh-baked bread.

Let’s start with the hot subs. The chipotle cheese steak ($7.45) is your quintessential Philly cheese steak with a faint hint of chipotle flavor. The steak was slightly tough, but it had enough melty cheese, sauteed onions and sauteed peppers to soften it up. If you choose the wheat bread, you should know that it’s sturdy, but as a result, it’s a little tough, too.

The pastrami reuben ($7.35) was sorely lacking thousand island, but all the other expected components and flavors were there. I appreciated the generous portion of thinly sliced pastrami, and it worked well on white bread instead of rye. Other hot subs include BBQ beef, bacon ranch chicken cheese steak, and meatball and cheese.

20170310_121550If you’re trying to pick a cold sub, let me suggest Jersey’s Shore Favorite ($6.55), which has a thick layer of ham and cappacuolo. I got it “Mike’s way,” meaning onions, tomatoes, seasoning, vinegar and oil, on white, which was much softer than the wheat bread. Other than the fact that you’ll need 2-3 napkins to eat this, I really enjoyed the fresh and Italian flavors of this sub. Tuna, BLT and roast beef are other choices in this section of the menu.

I probably won’t order any more wraps. The contents are good–I enjoyed the meaty, juicy buffalo chicken ($7.45)–it’s the wraps themselves with which I have the issue. The tortilla–you get your choice of white, wheat or tomato basil–is way too big and seemingly quadruple wrapped; in fact, many bites, you’re only eating wrap.

You should note that you’re not going to get your food as quickly as a Subway or Silver Mine–hence why the line is usually to the door–but it’s the trade-off for freshly cooked ingredients (e.g. they saute the steak on the spot). It’s too bad the restaurant didn’t think to make a waiting area.

Jersey Mike’s is open every day for lunch and dinner.

Freska Mediterranean Grill

Sunday, March 5th, 2017

20170220_113211Freska Mediterranean Grill is a decent outpost of Greek food outside of downtown.

What I mean is that I mostly enjoyed everything I ordered, though many items fell just shy of perfection. For example, the chicken in the chicken shawarma ($6.99) was dry, but fortunately it was saved by all the components, including the soft, grilled wheat pita, the creamy tabouleh and the fresh veggies. The red pepper aioli gave it more depth.

Meanwhile, the lamb in my lamb gyro ($6.99) was tasty but was barely room temperature. Still, it’s a pretty worthy gyro, and the tzatziki sauce certainly complemented, not overpowered, the flavor.

I also tried a few of the sides. The falafel (four pieces for $3.95) is extra crunchy and topped with a super thick tahini sauce. They came out of a warmer, so they weren’t as fresh as they could be.

20170227_113447The spinach pie ($5.50) was the only item I got that didn’t have a flaw. It’s a generous piece that’s flaky, soft, warm, not overly spinachy and the exact right amount of cheese.

Other menu items include kebabs, salads and soups. All the items are served assembly line-style.

Freska Mediterranean Grill is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout.

I Love Tacos

Sunday, February 5th, 2017

20170202_114255It seems I’ve been making regular trips west on University Avenue to Mexican restaurants, from Lupe’s to Lalo’s to now I Love Tacos on Branch Street. If you add Cocina Real to the mix, you have three better options for Mexican cuisine in that area than what’s presented at I Love Tacos.

While I usually dine at a restaurant 2-3 times before recapping the experience, I didn’t need more than one lunch visit to make up my mind about the place. I was surprised that tacos only make up a small percentage of the menu, and you have to ask for an exception to get them individually instead of as a plate.

That taco plate gives you three for $9.99, and fortunately you may mix and match the toppings, and you may choose between corn or flour tortillas. The diced steak was well-seasoned but tough. After a few bites, I had to add salsa to soften it a bit. The pork also was well-seasoned, but as can often happen with pork, it was very dry. On the menu, it’s called “Taco Love,” and it comes with fried onions and bacon, though no bacon came with mine.

According to a waitress, the new menu removed tzatziki sauce from the gyro taco, which was too bad, since the lamb was–guess what–dry as heck. In fact, some pieces snapped in half like a rye chip you would find in a bag of Gardetto’s. At least the portions of steak, pork and lamb were plentiful.

Since I was underwhelmed by what should have been the best items of this restaurant, I had no inclination to try anything else on the menu. But just to let you know, there are fajitas (e.g. fajita chilanga is $16), seafood (crab tostada is $8.50), burritos (burrito cheesesteak is $8.99), chimichangas (chimichanga autenticos is $10) and lunch specials.

I Love Tacos is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout.
