Namio’s Sports Pub

Sunday, September 2nd, 2012

Isn’t the first rule of opening any business “location, location, location”? Despite being so close to Highway PD and Seminole Highway, Namio’s Sports Pub is set back behind other buildings and consequently is hidden from the road.

That may explain why in my three visits the place was dead. Once, for lunch, I thought the place was closed. Another, at 10:30 on a Saturday night, it felt odd to be drinking in such a large space with hardly anyone else around.

Despite the lack of patrons, Namio’s actually has pretty good food. You can’t go wrong with the steak burger ($7.99), for example. The flavor was wonderful and further enhanced by the cheddar I added, and the kaiser bun was soft yet strong enough to support the juicy patty. The accompanying sweet potato fries had the perfect ratio of crunchy exterior to soft interior.

I also was impressed by the fried fish (available beginning at 5 p.m. Friday), especially the crisp and light breading that was used. It did need just a hint of salt, though. I chose the hash browns with fried onions as the side and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Regarding the “sports pub” in Namio’s name, I hate that bars use the term so liberally. There are a few flat panel TVs scattered throughout the space, but I wouldn’t go here to watch a game unless I was too lazy to go downtown (or even BW3s just down the street).

Namio’s is open for lunch, dinner and carryout every day, with daily happy hour and nightly drink specials.

$5 Movies at Star 18 in Fitchburg

Friday, July 9th, 2010

American Multi-Cinema (AMC) bought recently Kerasotes ShowPlace Theatres, which ran Star 18 in Fitchburg, Desert Star 15 in Lake Delton and Johnson Creek 12 in Johnson Creek, to name a few in the area. Kerasotes had a $5 movie club in which certain movies would be $5 for members anytime, and AMC has now one-upped the deal.

All non-IMAX movies are $5 all day Monday-Thursday and before noon Friday-Sunday. That means you may see new releases for just five bucks during certain periods, a big savings considering the regular price is $10 for adults.

By comparison, Marcus Theatres have $5 movies before 11 a.m. Friday-Sunday only.

On the EAT page of EatDrinkMadison.com, you will find the “Star Cinema” search box, which will give you suggestions of places to go if you’re thinking of dinner-and-a-movie.

Atomic Koi

Friday, April 30th, 2010
The Atomic Koi Cocktail Lounge opened recently in half the space for the former Kelly’s Grille in Fitchburg, and it seems like a nice addition to the area. Basically, it was a bar with a space-agey feel that’s a nice place to chill (if that makes sense).

Hawk Schenkel (of Hawk’s Bar) did a great job in redesigning the space, though I would have added more booths in place of the shufflepuck area (seems out of character for a lounge). Some relatively more private seating are located in the corners, a nice retreat if you’re with a large group. According to the manager, an outdoor seating area will be built to the side of the building by the end of May.

Atomic Koi has an extensive cocktail menu, ranging from flavored martinis to mojitos to ice cream drinks to champagne drinks. I went on a Thursday night when it wasn’t too crowded, but I suspect on a Friday or Saturday night, it could take a while to get a drink, since each of these specialty cocktails takes more time to make than a standard drink.

The prices were reasonable, by the way. Our tab for seven cocktails was just $37.

Atomic Koi has daily happy hour and free WiFi. While no food is served, you can always grab a slice of pizza at Roman Candle–which took over the other half of the space–on your way out.
