Burger contest winners

I had a great time running the contest last month for the restaurant/bar with the best burger(s) in the Madison area. The Village Green won with 59 percent of the vote, followed by the Blue Moon (34 percent), Dotty Dumpling’s (five percent) and the Great Dane (two percent). The four finalists received the most nominations in the first round, in which all restaurants and bars were eligible.

The Village Green received a certificate indicating its distinction.

Although Dotty Dumpling’s took the initial lead, it soon became a back-and-forth race between the Blue Moon and the Village Green, as each held the lead three separate times.

It’s interesting to note the changing tastes of various demographics. Many longtime (older) Madisonians love the burgers at the Plaza, but it did not receive any votes in the first round. That same group would likely not have voted for the Great Dane, which was shown to be a favorite among the relatively younger crowd that voted.

Outside Wisconsin, the Village Green carried Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Arizona, Oklahoma, Tennessee and South Carolina, while Dotty Dumpling’s won California, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio and New York and the Blue Moon took Mississippi and North Carolina.

Also, congratulations once again to Stephanie Byrnes of Madison. We picked one voter at random for a prize pack containing a Bucky Book, $15 Starbucks gift card and $50 gift certificate to the winning restaurant.

Different BBQ types

While I have yet to visit the new Porky Pine Pete’s, a weekend trip to Durham, N.C., allowed me to sample some Carolina BBQ. In that region, you’ll encounter chopped pork from the entire pig (called “Chopped BBQ”) with a side of vinegar-based sauce. I tried it at two different restaurants (the Pit in Raleigh and the Backyard BBQ Pit in Durham; both were featured on the Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food”), and I had mixed feelings. I did like the meat itself, but I wouldn’t make the vineger-based sauces my first choice.

I guess it’s because I’m more accustomed to the Kansas City-style BBQ, which uses a tomato and molasses-based sauce. Think of any local restaurant at which you may order BBQ sauce with your food (chicken tenders, pulled pork sandwich, chicken McNuggets, etc.), and you’ll remember that it’s always a KC-style sauce.

Let’s not forget about Texas-style (mostly beef ribs and brisket and no sauce) and Memphis-style (50-50 between dry rub and wet rub) as alternatives.

Where to put a plaza?

While in Orlando for a conference, I went downtown with a group to the Wall Street Plaza, an area the size of a block with several bars and restaurants and enclosed by a portable gate (tagline: “8 Venues, 1 Destination”). The advantages are that you only have to get carded once (as you enter the gated area), you may bring your drinks outside the bar to the common area and the center serves as a good place for live music.

The plaza made me ponder where we could put one in Madison. The obvious thought is State Street, since there are already an abundance of bars and restaurants, and the only vehicles are buses and taxis. I wouldn’t recommend blocking off the entire street (a la FreakFest); rather, two segments. The first is on the campus end from Lake Street to Frances Street and include the bars on University Avenue (Wando’s, Church Key, etc.). This unfortunately would require some sort of fence on University Avenue itself. 

Another could be in the 100 block by the Capitol (Frida, Zander’s) combined with the 100 block of W. Mifflin Street (Ivory Room, Silver Dollar).

Speaking of the Capitol, I could see a plaza in the 100 block of E. Main Street, where the Argus, Maduro, etc. exist. That segment already has seen block parties in the summer, plus the bars aren’t across from a hotel like the 100 block of W. Main Street (Inn on the Park) is. 

What do you think? Where else could we have a plaza in the Madison area? (Sorry, I couldn’t find an aerial phot of Wall Street Plaza. Its Web site is a piece of shit.)
