MOD Pizza

Sunday, January 22nd, 2017

20170116_121117Another build-your-own pizza place opened in the Madison area, a chain restaurant in Fitchburg called MOD Pizza, in the space where the Hemingway cigar bar once stood.

I was reluctant to review this place, only because how different could it be from Dell’s Pizza Lab or Lotsa Stone Fired Pizza? Turns out, not much.

One thing that was immediately apparent is that the staff needs more training. Here are two examples:

  • The employee making our salad didn’t even know what size it was.
  • The pizza had the expected char, but only because an employee didn’t know how to get the pizza out of the oven and had to call for help.

The pizzas comes on a very thin crust and in mini (6″ for $4.87), mod (11″ for $7.87) and mega (double 11″ for $10.87) sizes. Salads fall under the same pricing.

20170116_121049Nine “classic” pizzas–as in, the toppings are pre-decided, but you can still add more–lead off the menu. The Tristan was relatively light in flavor, even with the generous portion of roasted red peppers and mushrooms (I added spicy sausage). I actually didn’t miss the lack of pizza sauce, thanks to the pesto drizzle.

Other classics include the Calexico (grilled chicken, jalapenos, Gorgonzola) and the Dillon James (garlic, tomatoes, fresh chopped basil). Toppings include garbanzo beans and anchovies; finishing sauces include hot buffalo and balsamic fig glaze.

On the same crust are the garlic and cinnamon strips. The 6″ garlic strips ($2.97) don’t look like much, but they have a satisfying garlic flavor. They’re even better with some sri-rancha sauce on the side.

MOD Pizza is open every day for lunch and dinner.

The Thirsty Goat

Sunday, December 11th, 2016

20161210_162719The Thirsty Goat replaced the former Casa del Sol in Fitchburg. The menu features typical American fare and some smokehouse items and reminds me of Tony Roma’s, which used to exist a few blocks away.

Although it’s not a destination restaurant, the Thirsty Goat does help fill the restaurant void in Fitchburg. According to a server, it will start brewing its own beer next year.

As expected with a smokehouse menu, your table includes homemade BBQ sauces. All four were essentially the same, but I found myself using the chipotle one the most. One way to try all the smokehouse items is the sampler platter ($22.99).

  • The meat came off the ribs easily and had enough flavor that it didn’t require any sauce.
  • On the other hand, the brisket was mild in flavor and a bit dry, requiring sauce.
  • The sausage was dense, had a good snap and had a slight heat.
  • You get one each of pulled pork, brisket and chicken in the smoked sliders appetizer ($10.99). The chicken really stood out by being moist and smoky.

20161210_162617The rest of the menu has burgers/sandwiches, entrees, salads and a Friday fish fry.

  • The Atlantic cod ($12.99) was a bit soggy–I prefer my fried fish crunchy. I’m glad I didn’t get the all-you-can eat version ($17.99).
  • The broasted chicken (2 pieces for $8.99, 4 for $12.99) perfectly combined crunchy and tender textures. It’s a hidden gem on the menu.
  • The salmon fillet ($16.99) was a pleasant surprise. The menu doesn’t describe it, but the salmon is heavily seasoned and was bursting with flavor.
  • As for the sides, the beans are slightly sweet and spicy but the red peppers overtook the flavor. There was good heat in the corn but it was otherwise bland. The corn bread was like spongecake and served at room temperature. The mac and cheese was creamy but average.

The Thirsty Goat is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout.

Me & Julio

Sunday, August 21st, 2016

Fitchburg has so few restaurants, especially south of McKee Road, that it’s no surprise Me & Julio has seen big crowds almost every night since opening in May.

When you walk in, it feels like a chain restaurant, perhaps a cross between Texas Roadhouse and Chili’s. An awkwardly positioned host stand is to the left of the entrance, and a giant bar sits in the middle of the restaurant.

Drinks and apps. You could be fine just having some specialty cocktails and eating off of the lengthy appetizer list. Me & Julio crafts its own margaritas, martinis and Bloody Marys.

  • My favorite was the passion fruit margarita. It’s sweet, not too dense and not too tequila-y.
  • The tequila old fashioned is an interesting spin on the classic Wisconsin cocktail. In fact, it really does resemble an old fashioned, though a bit stronger.
  • The walleye fingers ($11.99) were pricey for the portion size, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the fish tasted and the fact that it wasn’t overly breaded.

American and Mexican. You’ll find both American and Mexican cuisines on the lunch/dinner and breakfast menus. While you wait for your food, you can munch on some free popcorn that comes with your table.

  • I enjoyed the heat and multitude of flavors in the Julio Burger ($11.99) coming from the poblano peppers, ghost peppers and chorizo patty.
  • The plate of fish tacos ($12.99) is pretty filling. Unlike the walleye, the cod in the tacos did not taste fresh, but they were semi-saved by the thick, flour tortillas that tasted like grilled pita bread.
  • I look forward to returning for breakfast to try the cajun hash ($11.99), which includes andouille, chicken, shrimp and cajun Hollandaise.

Me & Julio is open for dinner every day, lunch Monday-Friday and brunch on weekends. Tuesdays feature half-price classic margaritas.
