Fuddruckers

May 1st, 2016

Fuddruckers is back in the Madison area for the first time since its State Street location closed in 2007. It took over the space once occupied by Cheeseburger in Paradise last October.

Speaking of which, do you ever remember Cheeseburger in Paradise’s parking lot being anything but full? It’s strange to see that lot typically empty, but after dining at this particular Fuddruckers, I can see why.

Needs improvement: This Fuddruckers is not up to the standards that the national chain sets.

  • This location has zero atmosphere–it’s very sterile inside.
  • Condiments such as ketchup weren’t stocked.
  • No trays are given when you pick up your food order, which means multiple trips carrying hot pans.
  • The lids for the cups don’t even fit the cups!

The menu: I’ve been to several Fuddruckers, and at least the food here was consistent in quality compared to other locations. If you’re not familiar, the menu is made up almost entirely of burgers (I miss the range of appetizers that Fuddruckers used to serve).

  • The Bourbon burger ($7.99) was a satisfying combination of bacon, onions and BBQ sauce on a fresh-baked bun.
  • The chili on the chili cheese fries ($3.99) was surprisingly delicious–meaty and not too watery. More cheese was needed, though.
  • My favorite topping at the condiment bar was the jalapeno nacho cheese. Good thickness and a slight touch of heat. It goes well with everything on the menu, even the salads.

Fuddruckers is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout. Beer is served, too.

Rising Sons

April 24th, 2016

The owners of Rising Sons did a smart thing by dropping the confusing “deli” from the name in its second restaurant, located at the corner of Old Sauk and High Point. If you’re not familiar, Rising Sons serves Laotian and Thai cuisine in a small, intimate environment.

A long list of soups and noodle soups, along with a smiley face, greet you on one part of the menu. Though the Duck Noodles Soup ($9.95) and the Pho Nam Tok ($8.95, rice noodles with meatballs) were tempting, I settled on the Sukiyaki ($8.95). The peanut sauce was subtle but definitely had a presence, especially with the spice that built up over time on my tongue. Everything, from the beef to the eggs to the vermicelli noodles, worked well together except the celery, the flavor of which was out of place.

Other entrees include curry dishes and stir-fried noodles dishes. I enjoyed the simplicity of the Tom Khem ($8 at lunch), which was white rice, a hard-boiled egg and braised pork. After you’re done eating the tender pork, you may want to soak up the rest of the soy sauce gravy with the rice.

The Shrimp in a Blanket ($6.95) also is a simple dish: one peeled, jumbo shrimp inside an egg roll wrapper, deep fried. I think I detected some ginger in it; otherwise, you’re pretty much just eating a shrimp egg roll minus all the other fillings.

A unique item on the menu was the papaya salad ($6.95), which I ordered medium-spicy. I found the shredded, unripened papaya to be slightly sweet, slightly sour (from the lime) and even refreshing, despite the slight burn I got from the spice. I recommend you share this bowl with someone, because the generous portion can get to be too much after a while.

Rising Sons is open every day for dinner and Monday-Friday for lunch. Note on lunch: get there early, as there’s usually just one employee who acts as hostess, waitress and cook, meaning service can be slow.

New, spicy items at KFC, Wendy’s, BK

April 17th, 2016

Earlier this year, KFC released the limited-time Nashville Hot Chicken in bone-in and tender form. This red-orange-colored, extra-crispy chicken is actually spicy (maybe a 6 out of 10), unlike KFC’s hot wings. The restaurant claims “you are about to taste the best spicy chicken you’ve ever had,” and I don’t totally disagree. That’s because the Nashville recipe isn’t just spicy, it also has a touch of sweetness to give the chicken more depth.

Each order comes with a slice of pickle, which is meant to be a lozenge, according to KFC. You should note that the chicken is immensely greasy; I mean, it’s bathing in a pool of grease, so have 2-3 napkins ready. Although I didn’t do this, you could always sop up the grease with your cornbread or biscuit if you liked it that much.

I had low expectations for the Jalapeno Fresco Spicy Chicken Sandwich at Wendy’s, only because its Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a joke. It turns out, I actually like this new entry, which is around for a limited time. The fresh, diced jalapenos are the only thing that makes the sandwich spicy, but it’s an enjoyable heat.

The crispy chicken holds up well under a blanket of tasty, gooey ghost pepper sauce and pepper jack cheese, all inside an jalapeno bun (no discernible spice in the bun). The sliced red onion was superfluous in this otherwise enjoyable sandwich.

Burger King is coloring its buns again, and this time they’re bright red. The Angriest Whopper has hot sauce baked into the bun; however, similar to black buns in the A.1. Halloween Whopper, the red buns taste like any regular bun.

In fact, the entire sandwich is a disappointment. The spicy angry sauce is more like a tangy BBQ sauce, the sliced jalapenos (likely from a can) were flavorless and both the angry onion petals and bacon were soggy from the sauce. On a spice level, I’d give the Angriest Whopper 2 out of 10.
