You probably wouldn’t expect Waunakee to house a Nicaraguan restaurant, but it’s worth a trip to Los Dos Cuates for the excellent cuisine.
Meat is well represented on the menu, with various versions and serving sizes of beef, pork, chicken and fish available (and I tried one of each).
First up, I got the roasted pork ($20.99) and really enjoyed it. The roasting made the pork quite tender, and the grilled char flavor made me think I was eating a steak at times. I also enjoyed the flavorful side of red beans and rice as well as the crispy and thinly sliced fried plantains, which were probably the best I’ve ever had.
To my pleasant surprise, the roasted chicken ($20.99) was actually broasted. With its excellent fried flavor complementing the moist and tender meat, the chicken was definitely worth ordering.
I loved the fried tilapia ($24.99), which was crispy on the outside and flaky and tender inside. You get the entire filet (bones and all), and it went well with the accompanying hot sauce and rice. I would definitely order this again.
Among the beef dishes, I picked the shredded beef ($23.99), and it was exactly what I had hoped for: juicy and bursting with flavor. My guess is that the beef was stewed in a tomato-based broth for hours. The beef was good as-is and also on top of the side of arepas (corn cakes).
Other beef dishes include beef churrasco ($24.99) and the Nicaraguan enchiladas ($15.99).
For a group or a big eater, you can get the Boquita Mixta ($55.99), which comes with roasted beef, roasted chicken, roasted pork, chicken wings, tacos, French fries and several other items.
Los Dos Cuates is open every day for lunch and dinner.
