Wisconsin Brewing Co.’s first two beers

Saturday, May 25th, 2013

Wisconsin Brewing Company isn’t slated to open until this fall (probably around Nov. 1, according to a company spokesperson), yet it already has released two beers through the Great Dane for the public to try.

On April 3, brewmaster Kirby Nelson unveiled WBC #001 Golden Amber Lager. Then on May 21, his WBC #002 American IPA followed.

“We’re beer guys, and (these beers) represent styles we enjoy sampling with our friends,” Carl Nolen, president of WBC, said.

Both are what I think are “safe beers,” meaning that they will please the masses a la New Glarus Brewing Co.’s Spotted Cow. The golden amber in particular was light, refreshing and easy on the palate.

Meanwhile, the IPA was milder than I thought it would be (not a bad thing). Still, the beer had an excellent aroma and just the right amount of hop flavor (for me, this means not an overwhelming amount).

Wisconsin Brewing Company plans to release at least one more beer before it opens, but the number depends on the amount of time that Kirby gets at the downtown Great Dane, where he currently brews.

Pancheros contest

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Here’s an interesting contest from Pancheros:

Pancheros salutes Bob, whose claim-to-fame is mixing ingredients for a uniform taste in each bite, by holding a contest in which diners take the unique utensil out of the kitchen and into the wild. Participants are encouraged to get imaginative and take Bob to places it otherwise would never see, like the beach or an iconic landmark.

To enter the contest, pick up a Bob at any Pancheros. Candidates must then snap a picture of Bob somewhere outside of the tool’s original home and post it to Pancheros’ Facebook page. One fan will be chosen on May 31 and another on June 7 to win free Pancheros burritos for a year based on the creativity of their submissions.

The contest will culminate on June 14, when one lucky participant will receive the ultimate grand prize of a hot air balloon ride along with a year of free burritos! Other standout entries will receive various surprise goodies from the burrito establishment.

Memorial Day Events

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

I find it amusing when I ask people if they have any plans for Memorial Day weekend, and they reply that they’ll be going to Bratfest. In other words, they have zero plans, but they don’t feel like they’re completely wasting their weekend if they at least go to Bratfest.

Granted, it’s a great event, with the live music, carnival, Friday morning drive-thru and run/walk, but there’s so much more happening in the area, especially if you prefer day trips.

For example, the annual ChocolateFest in Burlington runs Friday-Monday. You can take part in the chocolate eating contest, visit the petting zoo and check out the Nascar exhibit.

While we’re still on the subject of festivals, the New Glarus Music Fest runs Saturday-Monday. Bands include Little Vito and the Torpedoes and The Jimmys.

The Mad City Ski Team starts its season on Sunday. Will it win yet another national championship this year?

On Monday, Monona will have its 58th annual Memorial Day parade, starting at 10 a.m. on Monona Drive. And while you’re in town, Monona’s community pool will be open for the season.

Finally, if you’re looking for overnight trips, here’s my previous post on where to stay and dine.
