Food carts: Slide, Leia’s Lunchbox

Sunday, May 14th, 2017

20170510_114742Slide has really mastered the slider sandwich. You can get one for $4.50, two for $8 and three for $11, and they come with one side and a few housemade potato chips. Regarding those chips, they are quite enjoyable, having a light fried flavor. You can even buy them in stores such as Metcalfe’s.

You have your choice of meat sliders and veggie sliders. My favorite was the Power Ball, which is a giant meatball stuffed with mozzarella and topped with a slightly spicy marinara sauce. The meatball itself is tender with the right amount of pork flavor.

Want a tasty shredded Italian beef sandwich? Get the How do You Say the Name of that Pepper? sandwich. It is loaded with juicy beef and comes with provolone cheese and soft pepperoncini peppers.

Slide also has daily specials. The key component of Dina’s Texas–a succulent BBQ beef sandwich with a slice of cheddar cheese–was the crunchy fried onions, which added another layer of taste and texture.

My only disappointment was with the Buff Chick because the shredded chicken was a bit tough, and the carrots and celery seemed out of place.

20170322_121711If you want unhealthy but tasty, go to Leia’s Lunchbox.

Start with the Wisconsin poutine ($9 small, $16 medium, $23 large). This version is topped with nacho cheese instead of gravy, the cheese curds are deep fried (though the insides weren’t melty) and bacon bits are sprinkled on top. By the way, the small size is enough to feed two people–I can’t imagine what the large size looks like.

Sadly, I think the name of the Frat Boy burger ($8 single, $12 double) is derived from the homemade ranch sauce that’s generously applied (don’t think about it too much). That sauce is not as thick and is more mild in flavor than a typical ranch sauce. The rest of the burger has lettuce, tomato and crispy bacon, and overall I thought it was a satisfying sandwich.

Other specialty burgers include the Buckin’ Rodeo ($8, $12), which comes with bacon, a fried onion ring, cheese and BBQ sauce, and the Trippin’ Swiss ($7, $11), which comes with mushrooms, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onion.

La Rosita Mexican Buffet

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

20170426_120620The Madison area has plenty of Chinese and Indian buffets, making La Rosita Mexican Buffet in Monona a rarity. You will not find a taco bar here. Instead, you will be treated to a fairly robust selection of dishes.

First, I find it comical how many people complain online that you have to pay as you enter the door. That’s how buffets work! (See Ponderosa or Pizza Ranch for examples.)

The buffet costs $9.99 and includes a beverage. Note that most items were mislabeled, so double-check what you’re selecting.

  • I haven’t seen pork skins in salsa verde at other restaurants. You’ll notice a tartness from the sauce alongside good chicharrones flavor. If the skins don’t appeal to you, you can instead get the chunks of pork in salsa verde dish, although the pork was slightly tough.
  • The semi-thick slices of ham were tender and had the right amount of saltiness, and they worked well in the thin tomato sauce.
  • The same broth-like sauce adds flavor to the shredded chicken, which has a hint of heat.
  • The steak and potatoes was okay. It was hard to discern the full flavor of the steak, and the potatoes made the dish blander.
  • The ham taquitos were really dry, but I improved them by dipping them in the delicious homemade guacamole.
  • A safe bet for less adventurous eaters is the steak fajitas or the scrambled eggs with various veggies. They’re both fairly standard, with nothing to complain about.

20170426_122047The rest of the buffet includes variations of the aforementioned dishes plus desserts (cakes), fruit, soups and salad. You get your choice of corn or flour tortillas brought to your table.

La Rosita Mexican Buffet is open every day for lunch and dinner.

Zoup!

Sunday, April 23rd, 2017

20170419_115059Zoup!, located in Greenway Station, really does serve some outstanding soup. In fact, I wish there were more locations of this national chain in Madison so that I could have more convenient access to the soups.

Apparently, there are “hundreds” of recipes, according to the menu, but 12 soups are available any given day. They come in five sizes, from side (8 oz.) to XL (32 oz.), and range in price from approximately $4-$12, depending on the soup.

20170405_121100I was impressed with the Pumpkin Pie Bisque ($5.25 for a cup) because it’s true to its name. It’s pureed pumpkin with brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg and tastes just like the pie. In other words, imagine putting a pumpkin pie in a blender until it liquefied–that’s this soup.

Lobster bisque ($6.75 for a cup) is in my top three of favorite soups, so I had to try it at Zoup! Here, it’s much creamier than the average, and there was more crawfish by far than lobster. Still, the seasoning was spot on, and it made for a good dip for the accompanying bread (your choice of French, multigrain or sourdough).

20170405_121905My No. 1 is French onion soup, and Zoup!’s version ($4.50 for 8 oz.) did not disappoint. It was very thick (instead of that watery crap other restaurants serve), had the right amount of salt and the onions were soft and tender, as they should be.

The corn and crab chowder ($5.25 for 8 oz.) is hearty, though it had too much potato and not enough crab or red peppers. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had some hot sauce to go with this. Warning: this soup is high in calories, as each 8 oz. serving has a whopping 440 calories.

I skipped the few salads and tried some of the sandwiches. The albacore tuna sandwich ($5.75 for a half) was light, and that’s because the tuna salad barely had any mayo, and the lettuce, tomato and capers don’t contribute to the flavor, obviously.

Meanwhile, the Southwest turkey ($7.75 for a whole) is fairly standard in terms of taste and appeal. It’s definitely helped by the chipotle mayo, which offers a little spice and flavor to the turkey, pepper jack cheese, tomato and toasted French bread. Guess I’ll stick to the soups from now on.

Zoup! is open every day for lunch and dinner.
