Lola’s Cafe

Sunday, December 17th, 2017

20171129_115136Lola’s Cafe is a small but uncozy diner that opened quietly this summer. I only noticed it because I was having lunch at Gloria’s, which is in the same strip mall on the far west side.

The restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Capriotti’s has a large, two-sided menu that has about 80 percent breakfast items, and the rest being sandwiches and salads. However, if you inspect the menu closely, you’ll see it’s mostly the same few items repurposed in different formats.

For example, there’s not much difference among the omelets, frittatas and scrambles here. I chose my frittata with kale, goat cheese and red peppers, and a similar version exists as a scramble. This frittata was very fresh tasting and pleasing to the eye, but it was bland enough that I had to add salt and pepper to get through it.

I also ordered a skillet dish. The ultimate ($9) is best described as hearty. The onions, mushrooms and green peppers are lightly sauteed, and there’s plenty of chopped bacon, ham and sausage. They are all resting atop hash browns that I would have preferred to be crispier.

I’m a sucker for grits, since you don’t see them on many menus in the Midwest. Lola’s version is solid enough that it holds together when you use a fork; in other words, I appreciate that they weren’t soupy. The biscuit, another side, is crumbly but dry, so get some jam or butter.

20171205_111812As expected at a diner, you’ll find pancakes and French toast on the menu.

French toast comes in two (“short”) or three (“full”) pieces. The ones in the banana, strawberry + Nutella ($7 for two, $8.5 for three) were flat, not fluffy, but they had a good eggy and buttery flavor. You get plenty of fresh strawberries and bananas but only a small smear of Nutella.

In case you don’t want breakfast items, you will find a few traditional American lunch items such as a burger and chicken sandwich. I was craving a Philly cheese steak at the time, and Lola’s version ($8.50) didn’t disappoint. The bun was soft but firm enough to hold the contents, the diced onions and peppers were cooked through, the right amount of cheese whiz was slathered on and the steak was tender.

Lola’s Café is open every day for breakfast and lunch.

Nauti Norske

Sunday, December 10th, 2017

20171126_114413Looks can be deceiving. The run-down exterior of the Nauti Norske in Stoughton is actually quite pleasant inside, with a surprisingly large outdoor patio space on the river. Think of this place as a destination to hang out with friends over a drink, with standard bar fare on which to nosh.

What I mean is that you’re not coming here for the food. For example, the pretzel braids ($4.95) were bland despite their buttery sheen. The ground mustard helped a little, but it, too, was bland.

Other appetizers include the usual suspects: onion rings ($5.95), cheese curds ($6.95) and chicken wings ($6.50).

For something more substantial, you’re left with sandwiches and pizzas. The former is served with chips or greens, or you can upgrade to steak fries or sweet potato fries for $2.

The patties in both burgers I tried were tiny and buried in a mountain of bread. In Odin’s burger ($10.95), you’ll mostly taste the bleu cheese crumbles, which mask the onion strings and chopped bacon.

20171126_112719The spicy burger ($9.95) did not live up to its name, despite the jalapenos, spicy cheese and Sriracha ranch sauce. That sauce was too heavy on the herbal flavor instead of the Sriracha flavor, and consequently, it detracted from this burger.

Pizzas include meat lovers and vegetarian. I ordered the Kraut pizza ($18 for 16″) and was pleasantly surprised. The thin crust is homemade and topped generously with cheese. I could have done without the onions, which were slightly undercooked, but the Canadian bacon added a nice saltiness, and the sauerkraut provided the crunch.

The patio space that I mentioned has its own bar, a fire pit, tables for two or more and deck chairs. It’s a nice place to listen to live music, and the owner will even give the occasional ride on his pontoon boat that’s parked on the pier.

The Nauti Norske serves dinner Wednesday-Sunday and lunch Friday-Sunday.

Zandru’s Tapas Bar & Restaurant

Sunday, November 26th, 2017

20171109_121253The food at Zandru’s Tapas Bar & Restaurant is good enough that I would order it for take-out, but it’s not good enough that I would dine in again.

When you first walk in, you’ll notice right away how much space is wasted. There’s no feeling of intimacy here; in fact, the stark-white decor makes you feel like you’re in an Apple store. Meanwhile, the service is a bit spotty–on one visit, I was brought an uncleaned cloth napkin, and it took several minutes for me to get a replacement since the staff left the dining area.

I did say the food was good, so here’s a recap.

20171122_121720You’ll find four types of montadito, which is basically sliced baguette with grilled meat on top. The Spanish sausage ($4.50) is tender and has a bit of heat to it. The lightly toasted bread maintains its texture against the sauce, and the onions and black olives add a bit of breadth to the flavor.

Paella can be portioned for one or two people. Of the four varieties, I tried the valenciana ($16/$38). The paella itself is comforting, and I appreciate that the veggies were cooked through. If the dish only had the Spanish sausage, I would have been satisfied. However, it also had chicken, which was so overcooked, I almost gave up chewing it. The mussels similarly were dry.

Some of the best shrimp I’ve ever eaten came in the gambas as ajillo ($9). The shrimp was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the broth in which it sat was garlicky but not in an overpowering way.

The Spanish tortilla ($7) is actually an egg and potato pie. The potatoes were soft but firm enough to keep their form, and they were the primary flavor, ahead of the quiche-like eggs. The onions and bell peppers were not prevalent.

Among the Latin Fusion entrees, I tried the pan con chicharron ($10). The salsa criolla adds a subtle tang to the tender roasted pork, and the bolillo bread held up to bind all the ingredients together.

Zandru’s Tapas Bar & Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
