Aphrodisiac foods

February 10th, 2013

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, let’s take a look at some foods that may kindle your romantic spirit.

Items like almonds, chili peppers, oysters, chocolate, garlic, honey, bananas and champagne are often associated with increasing libido, for reasons including abundance of Vitamin B, abundance of Vitamin E, abundance of zinc or simply being a placebo effect.

Instead of eating these foods straight up, here’s a meal you can make using them:

Aperitf: Sparking white wine with cassis.

Appetizer: Roast almonds with chili powder sprinkled on top.

Entree: Oysters Rockefeller topped with bits of garlic.

Dessert: S’Mores. Lay a piece of chocolate on a graham cracker and put it in the microwave for about 30 sec. Add some slices of banana on top, then drizzle with honey. Top with another graham cracker.

To enhance the atmosphere, dim the lights and play some Barry White, who, according to Wikipedia, is “known for his distinctive bass voice and romantic image” (of course you knew that). Make sure to avoid turkey, wine, greasy foods and too much alcohol (yeah, right).

No time to cook? You can always settle for a heart-shaped pizza. Just don’t forget the garlic.

Buck & Badger

February 2nd, 2013

Craving a fish boil? Have a hankering for some lamb? The new Buck & Badger, which took over for the space once occupied by Ian’s Pizza last November, is your destination for northern comfort foods.

Among the animals I ate in my visits to this lodge-like restaurant were duck, boar and bison. First, though, I want to talk about my surprise favorite, the beer brat corn dogs ($8.95). The brats were juicy, the breading was the right thickness and you get three tasty mustard sauces for dipping.

I did like the pan seared duck breast ($15.95), despite the pitifully small portions. I didn’t care for either of the sides, as both the sweet potato gratin and the carrots were under-cooked.

I can’t remember the last time I had boar, but I’m sure it had more flavor than the bland boar burger ($9.95, no sides). What saved this sandwich was the tasty boar bacon and the Gruyere cheese. I ordered the burger medium but got it rare.

The buffalo pot pie ($14.95) is worth ordering again. It contains a hearty amount of stew meat, mushrooms and potatoes, and the flaky puff pastry has a buttery goodness (though you have to use a knife to cut it). For the less adventurous eaters, Buck & Badger has five different salads on the menu.

I should stress that although there is a bar (it’s where you used to choose your slice of pizza at Ian’s), it’s primarily a restaurant. That’s because the bar area is really small, has no atmosphere and the owners want you to go to another one of their establishments, the Ivory Room, after your dinner (show your receipt for free cover). Plus, there are no drink specials here.

Buck & Badger is open every day for lunch, dinner and carryout.

7 tips for your Super Bowl party

January 27th, 2013

Next Sunday marks the annual tradition of gathering with friends to sit in front of a TV for eight-straight hours, watch two teams most people in the room don’t care about and eagerly anticipate commercials like teen girls camping out to see a “Twilight” movie.

To make the most of your Super Bowl experience, here are seven tips for a memorable and enjoyable party:

  1. Get a TV at least 60″ in size, 100″ to be safe. Doesn’t it always seem like the person with the smallest TV always hosts the party? It makes watching a game like sitting in the nose bleeds.
  2. CBS will promote its shows unmercifully. Why not turn the annoyance into a drinking game? For example, every time you see a commercial for “How I Met Your Mother” or “Elementary,” take a shot of tequila. By the end of the first quarter, you’ll have passed out, saving you from watching any more of those crappy promos.
  3. If there’s ever a lull in conversation, start a discussion on how the recently deceased Pauline Phillips (Dear Abby) would have advised Manti Te’o on his imaginary-girlfriend problems.
  4. Gambling is an excellent way to motivate people into caring about this game. I like Football Squares, in which you pay out every quarter based on the last digit of either team’s score. Or, if you want to steal your guests’ money, just run a Keno board (house edge is a whopping 25-29 percent).
  5. Don’t invite kids. Otherwise, you won’t be able to yell things like, “Holy sh*t! How can that f*cking ref be so goddamned blind? F***********ck!”
  6. What you serve depends on how many bathrooms your guests have access to. One bathroom = safe items like pizza, chicken wings and pulled pork. Two = riskier items like bean dip, spicy chili and chips made with Olestra. Three = I’m-getting-you-back-for-making-a-pass-at-my-wife items like laxatives in a drink or malaria.
  7. To make sure your guests have enough time to sober up for the drive home, stop serving drinks when the game is over. Because of course, everyone’s going to stay to watch an all-new episode of “Elementary” that immediately follows.
