Sarge’s

Sarge's sauceIt may be odd to hear this from a northerner, but I really like grits. Thus, I happily accepted an opportunity to review Sarge’s Shrimp & Grits Sauce, Yellow Stone Ground Grits and Seafood Seasoning.

Chef Julius West opened a food truck in 2012, and his shrimp & grits became the most popular item on the menu. That led West, whose dad was an Air Force sergeant, to bottle his sauce, with the goal of simplifying the art of southern cuisine for home chefs.

For the Shrimp & Grits Sauce ($12.99 for about six servings), all you have to do is add chicken broth to it. The flavor is sensational, built upon the combination of Sriracha, Worcestershire sauce, herbs, spices and other ingredients. I added shrimp, but you could certainly use other proteins. Heck, you may even want to dip bread into the sauce.

Sarge's gritsNot surprisingly, the sauce paired perfectly with the Yellow Stone Ground Grits ($6.99 for about eight servings). Straight up, they were creamy and didn’t have a bland taste like so many other grits. On top of that, these grits absorbed the Shrimp & Grits Sauce well.

Although the Shrimp & Grits Sauce was plenty flavorful, as mentioned, I did season the shrimp with Sarge’s Seafood Seasoning ($9.99 for 4.75 oz.). It falls in the same category as an Old Bay or Tony Chachere’s, and the seasoning goes well on basically everything from eggs to french fries.

You can purchase Sarge’s products from its website.
