Tokyo Sushi

Tokyo Sushisushi sports a full assortment of Japanese dishes, including tempura, hibachi and of course, sushi. It is the latest occupant of the house-restaurant space in the 1100 block of Willy Street.

The numerous sushi choices are served as entrees (along with salad and miso soup), cooked rolls, raw rolls, vegetable rolls and individual sushi/sashimi.

The first one I tried was the Lucky 7 roll ($14.95), which comes with king crab, scallion, masago (roe), salmon, tuna, yellowtail, red snapper, avocado and special sauce. Not every item is on every piece of the sushi, but you do get a lot of each. I appreciated that this roll was not drowned in sauce like so many other specialty rolls. The ingredients speak for themselves in this delicious roll.

On the other hand, I would have liked more sauce on the Crazy Dragon roll ($11.95). It’s a deep-fried roll, and the batter was surprisingly bland. Inside you’ll find tuna and avocado, and outside you’ll get roe and special sauce, which basically provides all the flavor for the roll. Other rolls on the menu include the sweet potato tempura roll ($5), the Dynasty roll ($10.95 with eel, shrimp and squid) and the Caterpillar roll ($13.95 with shrimp and tuna).

noodlesNone of the menus I found had a description of the seafood yaki soba ($16.95). When I opened the container, I was worried that only crab meat was included, because that’s all I could see on top. Fortunately, underneath the noodles were shrimp and scallops. The noodles were delicious, the way fried noodles should taste, as were the seafood items, which also carried the same sautee flavor.

I regretted ordering the beef teriyaki ($17.95). You get a big helping of the tender beef, but it’s nearly tasteless, and the teriyaki sauce is so thin and liquidy that it doesn’t adhere to anything, including the rice. As a result, I would probably avoid any of the other numerous teriyaki dishes.

Of note, Tokyo Sushi has a lunch menu that includes sushi, bento boxes, hibachi and teriyaki.

Tokyo Sushi is open on Sunday and Tuesday-Saturday for lunch and dinner.
