Fin Sushi

There has been a revolving door of restaurants in the shopping center on the 600 block of Junction Road, with the situation certainly made worse by the horrendous parking issues. Taking over for the spot previously occupied by Mad Shawarma is Fin Sushi.

Like other sushi places, Fin Sushi features standard rolls and a selection of specialty rolls. The Snow Stone roll ($10.50) has a lot going on. You get a bit of spice from the thin slice of jalapeno, some saltiness from the eel sauce, tenderness from the white tuna and crunchiness from the soft shell crab. As good as each component is, they didn’t seem to work together very well.

I specifically ordered the Volcano roll ($10.50) because of its unique appearance, as it resembles a plate of spaghetti. The top layer consists of shredded crab, eel sauce and spicy mayo. There were supposed to be fish eggs, but I couldn’t find them. The whitefish and avocado were good, though they were overwhelmed by the cream cheese inside.

The way to describe the Out of Control roll ($10.50) is that it works. The pulverized tuna contrasts with the crunchy bits of tempura and cucumber, and you get a nice heat from the spicy tuna. Great, fresh taste, though compared to the sauce-laden rolls I ate, this roll seemed bland.

The donburi ($13.95) is basically a deconstructed roll, with rice as the base. I got mine with eel and loved it. The eel was tender and had the right amount of sauce. The dish came with crab, which I ate with the sauce-soaked rice.

Off the sashimi menu, I tried the octopus ($4.50), which I liked. The two slices were very fresh tasting, not chewy and not dry. You also can order red snapper ($3.95), surf clam ($4.25) and yellow tail ($4.95).

I did order some a non-sushi item. The rock shrimp ($5.75) is deep-fried in tempura batter, though that’s not mentioned in the description. Each of the six butterflied pieces was very bland (e.g. no salt added), but the delicious spicy mayo saves the day.

Fin Sushi is open every day for lunch and dinner.
