McAlister’s Deli

img_20190121_114627712_hdrMore and more chain restaurants such as Panera, Five Guys and Jimmy John’s are creeping into the southern end of Lake Delton. This summer, the state got its first McAlister’s Deli, situated near the outlet mall.

The lines can be slow only because you have so many choices on the menu, including a large selection of sandwiches. You also can opt for a “Choose 2” ($8.69), which gives you a half order of any two items.

  • I really enjoyed the New Yorker ($9.99). It’s stacked high with tasty, thin-sliced corned beef and pastrami, so much that the marbled rye bread was a little soggy. The spicy brown mustard complemented the flavor.
  • McAlister’s does wonders with its club sandwiches, and the grilled chicken club ($8.89) is no exception. Toasted bread holds together tender, moist chicken, crispy bacon and tasty honey mustard made in-house.
  • After eating the New Yorker, I was disheartened that the California turkey reuben barely had any turkey. What makes matters worse, the coleslaw is too prominent, especially compared to the small amount of meat. At least there was enough thousand island to make it resemble a reuben.

  • The spuds are baked potatoes with various toppings.  The Black Angus roast beef spud is tender (both the beef and the potato) and buried in a ton of cheddar-jack cheese. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the caramelized onions, which were undercooked.
  • You’ll find quite the array of salads, including taco and Italian chopped. The Savannah chopped salad is very fresh and loaded with thinly sliced grilled chicken, cranberries, gorgonzola crumbles, tomatoes and cucumbers. The presence of honey-roasted almond slivers added some sweetness.
  • Besides everyday soups, McAlister’s also has a soup of the day, and one particular day it was crab and corn chowder. It was a little under seasoned, and it didn’t scream corn or crab flavor. The thin broth did have a tiny bit of heat.

McAlister’s Deli is open every day for lunch and dinner.
