I can’t say no to single malt scotch whiskey, which is why I eagerly accepted an invitation to try Magnus by Highland Park.
Magnus is matured in Sherry-seasoned American oak casks. It has won numerous awards, including a gold medal at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Highland Park, based in Kirkwall in the UK, has an impressive lineup of Viking-themed spirits, including a 16-year-old scotch called Wings of the Eagle and an 18-year-old scotch called Viking Pride.
You can discern the vanilla flavor, and the scotch is smoky but not too smoky. Magnus is definitely worthy of its awards, and I look forward to trying the other scotch whiskeys from Highland Park.
I also made a Strawberry Moon cocktail, which is comprised of muddled strawberries, marjoram leaves, lemon juice, simple syrup, soda water and Magnus. I thought the marjoram would overpower the drink, but instead the strawberries and scotch are the predominant flavors. It was refreshing, to say the least, and I would make it more often if I carried marjoram at home.
Magnus retails for $39.99 for a 750 ml bottle.
