Polar Joe

Polar JoeCold brew coffee is popular, and protein is popular, so why not combine them? That’s the premise of Polar Joe, and I accepted an offer to try several of its products.

Interestingly, Darcy Haggith, a microbiologist and endurance athlete, created Polar Joe back in 2017, well before protein was added or enhanced in everyday products we see today. It is made from grass-fed New Zealand whey isolate protein and ethically sourced coffee beans.

Polar Joe comes as a powder and is probably the best instant cold brew coffee I’ve ever had. I found it to be fine and easy to mix (just add 14 oz. of water and shake), meaning it avoided clumping up, which I appreciated.

The Classic Protein Cold Brew ($68.99 for a 40 oz. bag) and the decaf version ($68.99) each have 190 calories, 21 g. of protein and 16 g. of carbs in every serving, and the classic version has 110 mg. of caffeine. Both had a tasty mocha flavor, and you almost can’t tell which is which. In addition, I liked that the coffee wasn’t bitter thanks to the non-dairy creamer, and it had just enough sweetness from the organic coconut sugar that you don’t need to add any more sugar.

I also enjoyed the Matcha Tea Protein Latte ($69.99), which has 190 calories, 70 mg. of caffeine, 21 g. of protein and 15 g. of carbs per serving. The earthy flavor and subtle sweetness made it a soothing morning or afternoon beverage. You can get the matcha tea in vanilla or mocha flavors as well.

Other products include the Espresso + Protein ($48.99) and the Molto Matcha + Protein ($48.99).

Polar Joe is available in Wisconsin but not in Madison; however, you can purchase Polar Joe on its website.
