Sern Sapp brings Southeast Asian food back to Willy Street with a tasty assortment of Laotian dishes.
I want to kick things off with the nam khao ($11.50). This appetizer has a lot of tastes and textures. The tapioca rice flour crepes contained savory minced pork and were topped with crispy fried onions and crushed peanuts. All of it went well with the house dipping sauce.
I also enjoyed the khua fer ($15.50), which comes with your choice of beef, chicken, pork or tofu. The delicious stir-fried egg noodles are mixed with napa cabbage, green peppers, red peppers, mushrooms and broccoli. It came with bits of eggs that were so small that they didn’t contribute anything to the dish. At least the pork was good.
Other noodle dishes include the khao piak sen ($16.50) noodle soup, the khua mee ($16.50) fried rice noodles and pho ($16.50).
If you like curry, then you’ll love the or gati ($15.50). I chose beef for my protein, and it, along with the carrots, bamboo shoots, onions, potatoes and green beans, soaked up the delicious and creamy curry sauce. Of note, you can choose your spice level from 0 to 4.
One last item to discuss is the sein doht ($9). It’s beef jerky, and it was outstanding. I liked that the beef was tender (not chewy), and to my pleasant surprise, it sported a fried flavor.
Sern Sapp is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.
