It serves both African fare, “American favorites” and now Babcock ice cream.

Pre-COVID, Kingdom had a lunch buffet that allowed you to try several of the African dishes. The owner told me he hopes to bring the buffet back at some point in the future.

In the meantime, you can order those dishes in the A Taste of Africa menu. Among them is the domada ($11.49), which is a yummy peanut butter sauce that worked really well on top of chicken (you also can get beef or fish) and rice or couscous.

The curry ($11.49) was a pleasant surprise. Instead of tasting like a traditional curry, it had a tasty peanut flavor, though lighter than the domada. You can get it with chicken, beef or fish.

The description for the yassa ($11.49) said it comes with juicy, tender chicken, but mine was neither. Still, I enjoyed the uniqueness of the peppery sauce smothered on top.

One more chicken dish is the jerk chicken ($11.49), which I enjoyed. Of note, the spice rub is more sweet than spicy.

The American menu is huge. You’ll find burgers, sandwiches, wings and more than a dozen breakfast items. I started with the catfish strips ($8.99 for three, 4, 5). They are sooo good. The breading makes you think you’re eating fried chicken. Each strip has so much flavor that you don’t need to use tartar or hot sauce.

Meanwhile, the Italian beef ($8.99) is super juicy and tender. I didn’t expect to see cheese sauce on the sandwich, but it certainly added to the delicious flavor profile. (Pro tip: have a few napkins ready when you eat it.) All combo meals come with fries and a soda.

Kingdom Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Have patience when you order or dine in, as the owner is typically the sole employee working.

I was introduced to Kingdom Restaurant on the north side through Black Restaurant Week a few years ago.
